A landscape shaped by forts, trade and tradition
Rajasthan's desert is not an empty backdrop. It is a lived cultural landscape of fortress cities, villages, music, textiles and carefully adapted ways of life.
Palaces and battle-scarred fortifications mark routes once used by rulers, armies and merchants. Beyond these monuments, regional folk traditions retain their colour through music, festivals and highly developed craftsmanship.
The character changes from city to city. Jodhpur meets the edge of the Thar beneath a formidable fort; Jaisalmer rises in golden stone; Bikaner preserves the atmosphere of an old trading outpost; and the road toward Barmer passes settlements known for vernacular art and textiles.
