Palace on Wheels

A heritage train journey linking Delhi with forts, palaces, desert cities, wildlife landscapes and Mughal landmarks across Rajasthan and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

The journey

A moving introduction to Rajasthan

Palace on Wheels was created as a special heritage train experience centred on Rajasthan. Its appeal lies in connecting a succession of distinctive places while much of the longer travel takes place overnight.

The route recalls the era of princely railway travel, but today's experience should be understood as a modern tourism service. Travellers typically use the train as a structured overview of historic cities rather than as an in-depth stay in each destination.

Rajasthan was formed from former princely states whose rulers left a landscape of hill forts, walled cities, palaces, gardens and stepwells. The train places that architectural legacy beside desert scenery, wildlife habitat and the Mughal monuments around Agra.

Heritage context

From private coaches to themed rail travel

The original service began in 1982 and drew its identity from railway coaches associated with princely rulers and senior officials of British India. Those historic associations inspired the name and decorative concept.

A later air-conditioned train was introduced in 1991, with coaches named for former Rajput states such as Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The service has subsequently been refurbished and operating details have changed over time.

Descriptions of steam haulage, metre-gauge coaches, cabin electronics and specific onboard amenities in older accounts may no longer reflect the current train. Treat them as historical context, not a present-day specification.

Onboard rhythm

What the experience is designed around

Older accounts describe overnight travel, breakfast aboard the train, guided sightseeing after arrival and meals split between the train and heritage properties. Current arrangements may differ.

Cabins
Private accommodation in themed coaches; check current bed configuration and bathroom details.
Dining
Onboard restaurant service is traditionally central to the journey. Request current menus and dietary arrangements in advance.
Excursions
Organised visits may make the schedule efficient, but time at individual monuments can be limited.
Accessibility
Historic-style rail environments can present narrow corridors, steps and platform gaps. Ask for precise measurements and assistance arrangements.
Pace
Early starts, repeated transfers and a full sightseeing programme may be demanding despite overnight rail travel.

Planning questions

Before you choose the train

Does the Palace on Wheels always follow the same route?

Do not assume so. Stops, excursion order and operating periods can change. Compare the dated itinerary supplied for your departure before booking.

Is the journey suitable for travellers with limited mobility?

Suitability depends on cabin dimensions, train access, platforms, vehicles and monuments on the excursion programme. Obtain specific current accessibility information rather than relying on general assurances.

How much time is spent in each destination?

The itinerary is structured as an overview with organised visits. Travellers wanting unhurried museum, market or neighbourhood time may prefer to revisit selected cities independently.

Are meals and monument entries included?

Inclusions vary by fare and departure. Ask for a written list covering meals, drinks, transfers, guides, park visits, monument tickets, taxes and gratuities.

What should I pack?

Pack comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and layers suitable for cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Dress respectfully for sacred sites and check luggage limits for your cabin.

When should I arrive in Delhi?

Allow a buffer before departure rather than arranging a same-day international connection. Confirm the reporting point and time on your current travel documents.
